So, Microsoft eh? The Quake community can't help but have a love-hate relationship with the international super-company. Most of us run Quake on Windows, so most of us have to put up with it. But we all know how trashy Windows is, slow, clunky, a trillion versions of Direct X. 

"How could it get any worse?" we ask ourselves. 

Well, the answer is, make it totally incompatable with every version of Quake... 

"But they would never be stupid enough to make Windows incompatible with every version of Quake!" I here you cry.

WRONG! Introducing...

Windows-'just throw your Quake CD away'-2000

Thats right! Who had THAT spark of inspiration? I can see it now... Microsoft Head office, Research and development dept. all the 'boffins' sitting around a desk at 3 o'clock in the morning, trying to get a presentation ready for the 'Windows 2000 expo'. 
"It's just not different enough from '98" one of them says. 
"We have to put something in that makes people feel like it's new and different", another says.
"I have it!", a particularily small man exclaims while leaping to his feet "We make it totally incompatible with every peice of software not expressly designed for it! People will think it's a totally new operating system!". A round of applause fires up around the table and people chatter excitedly.

It's especially damning for those of us in the Quake community who play for the Multiplayer. It's going to be easier for fans of single player who can just get ID's next game, 'Return to Castle Wolfenstein'. Unfortunately, Quake 3 Arena remains the ultimate Multiplayer experience and I feel that the multiplayer in RTCW will not match it. Only the hardcore fans of the quake series will remain on Win98 and play online, reducing the amount of servers significantly.

We can but hope, that Lord Carmack will make a 2000 build of Q3A, else the multiplayer community will be seriously hurt.

Damn you Microsoft, you've done it again!
